Rain was not the only consequence of Nesat Typhoon in other parts of Chinese Taipei. According to the national weather bureau, as typhoon Nesat made landfall on the northeast coast of the island Saturday evening, it came with maximum sustained winds of 137 kilometers (or 85 miles) per hour and gusts up to 173 kilometers (107 miles) per hour. A total 111 persons were injured but fortunately all but 2 were minor injuries. More than 10,000 people (largely from Taiwan’s South) were evacuated before the Typhoon and 1,612 were still in shelters Sunday.
Nesat caused the cancellation of 145 international flights and cut power to nearly half a million households, Associated Press says.

The heavy rains of Sunday were due to Tropical Storm Haitang. The Storm’s eye made landfall in Pingtung County’s Fonggang, less than 60 kilometers (38 miles) south east of Tainan. Haitan is now moving northwest at 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) per hour. It is gradually to weaken into a tropical depression but, according to the weather bureau, the southwest monsoon induced by the storm will continue to bring rain nationwide until Thursday.

It was the first time since 1958 that 2 tropical storms made landfall in Chinese Taipei within 24 hours.
