Historic: Boston Red Sox add Katie Krall to organization's coaching staff

She will be a development coach with with the Red Sox's Double-A affiliate, making them the first MLB club to hire two female coaches.

The Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB) have hired Katie Krall as a development coach for their Double-A affiliate Portland. This makes the Red Sox the first MLB franchise to hire two female coaches. The first one was Bianca Smith in December 2020.

A 2018 Northwestern University graduate, Krall started her coaching career as a student when she became a student promotions coordinator for the Wildcats' baseball programme.

She served as an assistant general manager of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

From January 2020 to October 2021, Krall worked for the Cincinnati Reds as a baseball operations analyst. Before joining the Red Sox, she spent two months in Google's global strategy department.

She is currently pursuing her Master in Business Administration from the University of Chicago.

"I definitely think that at a point we will get to a place where women will just be hired," Krall said to the Masslive.com website. "It won't necessarily result in a Zoom call with reporters. I think that would be phenomenal. That's the ultimate goal that it doesn't become newsworthy anymore."

Earlier this year, the New York Yankees named Rachel Balkovec their Low-A manager, thus making her the first woman with a manager's job in Minor League Baseball.
