Italy come from behind to clinch 3-2 win against Canada

Williams Wong produced the three runs of Italy in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

Williams Wong’s bat produced all of Italy’s runs in Friday’s Placement Round contest against Canada at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup and led his team to their second win in as many games. Wong recorded a sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles in the game.

Italy took the lead in the third when Diego Luciani scored from third after Wong’s sacrifice fly to right field.

Canada, ranked 12 in the world, overtook the world No. 17 in the bottom of the fourth, with a line-drive double by Myles Naylor to right-centre field to bring in Dylan O’Rae and Sam White from second and first respectively.

One inning later Wong tied the game with his first RBI single of the game, to plate Edoardo Cornelli and in the seventh Wong hit an infield hit to produce the go-ahead run.

The defeat means Canada are heading towards their worst result at the U-18 Baseball World Cup since finishing 10th out of 21 teams in 1992 and ninth out of 10 teams in 1984. With one game to play against Panama on Saturday, they sit tied for ninth with Australia and Italy, all with a 2-2 win-loss record.

Italy play Placement Round leaders Brazil on Saturday looking to repeat or better their last outing in the U-18 Baseball World Cup when they finished ninth in 2017.
