U-23 Baseball World Cup Day 7: Australia, Mexico join Korea in Super Round

It was an exciting day of baseball at Tianmu Stadium, with two of the three makeup games finishing in extra innings. The results shaped Group B standings, with five teams tied at 2-3. The Team Quality Balance (TQB) calculations promoted Australia and Mexico.

The results of the three makeup games confirmed undefeated Korea as the No. 1 in Group B. The other five teams finished with the same record, 2-3.

The Team Quality Balance (TQB) calculation promoted Australia to the Super Round as the No. 2 finisher and Mexico as No. 3.

Korea beat both, thus will start the Super Round with a 2-0 record. Mexico defeated Australia on 14 November, 3-2. Despite their Group B ranking, they will start the Super Round with a 1-1 record, and Australia will begin with a 0-2 record.

DAY 7 RESULTS

Korea-Mexico 1-0

Korea scored the only run of the game on a double steal executed by the tie-break runners in the top of the eighth. A clear sign of how pitchers dominated. Korea's starter Saangyung Lee impressed with seven masterful innings. Hard-throwing reliever Donghyun Sung took care of the final three outs.

Mexico got out of the sixth with a well-executed double play.

Despite getting only three hits, Korea loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but reliever Manuel Castro retired Seungiu Han on a fly to centre.

Korea's Saangyung Lee worked a quick bottom of the seventh and took the game to extra innings.

Netherlands-Puerto Rico 4-1

Puerto Rico missed multiple scoring opportunities and fell on a throwing error during the tie-break. Dylan Farley and Nigel Calmes pitched four innings each, leading the Netherlands to the win.

Tyriq Kemp prevented Puerto Rico's Ezequiel Pagan from scoring with a perfect throw to home plate in the bottom of the first.

Puerto Rico missed another scoring chance in the second as Glenn Santiago grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The Netherlands took the lead in the top of the fourth as Darryl Collins beat a throw home by Kenen Irizarry.

Puerto Rico scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Glenn Santiago.

Puerto Rico stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Dutch left three on base in the seventh and the game went to extra innings.

A throwing error on a bunt by Darryl Collins gave the Netherlands a two-run lead.

Collins made it 4-1 as he scored on a groundout.

Cuba-Australia 3-1

Cuba played smooth defence, supporting their three pitchers. Cuba's timely hitting made the most of the chances that Australia's defence allowed. Designated hitter Guillermo Garcia batted in two of the three runs.

Cuba made the most of a defensive error and scored in the bottom of the first on a base hit by Guillermo Garcia.

With runners at first and second and no one out in the fourth, Yuri Fernandez prevented Australia from advancing them on a sacrifice bunt.

Naykel Cruz left Cuba's mound for fellow lefty Oscar Hernandez with the bases loaded Australia scored the tying run as Travis Bazzana grounded out.

Cuba kept supporting their pitchers in the fifth.

Carlos Revilla doubled to put Cuba ahead again.

A sacrifice fly by Guillermo Garcia made it 3-1

Cuba escaped a bases loaded jam in the sixth.
