WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup Day 6: Australia win two games in a day, Korea and Colombia qualify for Super Round

After the comeback win against the Netherlands, Australia carried their momentum into the next game and played even better as they outscored Puerto Rico to complete back-to-back wins. Korea will finish first in Group B. Colombia will advance as Group A No. 3. Bryan Alvarez batted in the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit double.

Four of the six places have been filled in the IV WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup Super Round, with Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea and Colombia punching their tickets.

Colombia's win over Germany saved their spot in the Super Round, joining Group A teams Chinese Taipei and Japan who already qualified after Day 5. This sends reigning world champions Venezuela to the Placement Round.

Korea beat Puerto Rico in eight innings and will qualify as Group B No. 1 The other two spots in Group B are up for grabs. On Tuesday, results created a three-way tie behind Korea.

Group B will be completed after the three make up games on Wednesday, 19 October.

Australia-Puerto Rico 8-0

After the comeback win against the Netherlands, Australia used the first two at-bats to open the score against Puerto Rico and won the second game of their day. The boricua were completely stunned by their rivals.

Australia is back in business. Alex Hall batted in the first run.

Travis Bazzana doubled to make it 3-0.

Australia added three more runs in the bottom of the second on a single by Chris Burke and a double by Alex Hall. They made it 8-0 in the fifth.

Jack Waters pitched five innings and earned the win.

Australia-Netherlands 5-4

Australia won the first of two games on Day 6 against the Netherlands and keep their chances for the Super Round. The Dutch took a 3-2 lead into the seventh, but the Aussie hitters got to relievers Jiorgeny Casimiri and Nigel Calmes.

Australia wasted no time and scored in the top of the first with Jarryd Dale, who led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch.

The Netherlands tied it on a couple of hit and with the help of a defensive error.

Clayton Campbell doubled in the top of the fourth to score Edward Mitchell and give Australia a new lead.

Jeandro Tromp hit a two-RBI double to reverse the lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Australia wasn't going to give up. Travis Bazzana tied it in the top of the seventh.

A bloop single by Dale put Australia again ahead, and Rixon Taylor Wingrove made it 5-3 with an RBI double.

The Dutch loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. They cut the gap to 5-4, but Darryll Collins became the final out, trying to score the tying run.

Korea-Puerto Rico 3-2

A swinging bunt by Hanbyul Kim scored the lead-tie break runner from third and gave Korea the fourth consecutive win. Puerto Rico will be back on the field at 19:00 to face Australia in the first makeup game of Group B.

Puerto Rico took the lead on a home run by Shawn Ross in the top of the fifth-

Puerto Rico protected the lead with great defence by catcher Jonathan Nieves.

Another spectacular diving catch by Shan Ross.

Korea tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a base hit by Seunghwan Song.

Korea homered to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh.

A two-out single by Ezequiel Pagan sent the game to extra innings.

Cuba-Mexico 2-0

A pinch-hit double by Bryan Gonzalez off reliever Yamil Castillo gave Cuba the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

Cuba hit three consecutive hits with one out in the second, but Mexico's starter Esteban Bloch got out of the jam.

Reliever Marlon Vega got Cuba out of a jam in the fourth. He had Brandon Valenzuela ground into an inning-ending double play.

Bryan Gonzalez doubled off the wall to put Cuba ahead in the top of the seventh.

Cuba scored an insurance run on a wild pitch.

Frank Alvarez took care of the three final outs, allowing just a walk.

Chinese Taipei-Venezuela 4-3

Chen Tso Tseng singled in the bottom of the eighth to score the lead tie-break runner and give Chinese Taipei their fifth consecutive win. The defending World Champions, Venezuela lost another tight one and will play in the placement round.

Chinese Taipei took an early lead.

Venezuela tied it in the top of the second on a base hit by Cesar Cesar.

Jesus Chrinos homered in the top of the third to make it 2-1 for Venezuela.

Chinese Taipei reversed the lead scoring two runs on three hits against Aldry Acosta.

Jesus Chirinos hit another home run in the top of the seventh and tied the game.

Chinese Taipei walked it off in the bottom of the eighth.

Japan-South Africa 9-0

Japan outhit (13-5) South Africa en route to their fourth win. The will head to the Super Round as the number two seed behind the hosts Chinese Taipei.

Japan broke the score open with five runs in the top of the third.

Japan never needed to look back. Ryota Kudo and four relievers limited South Africa to five runs.

Colombia-Germany 7-0

Colombia shut out Germany, getting the win they needed to clinch a spot in the Super Round.
They qualified as the number three seed out of Group A, behind Chinese Taipei and Japan, and will start the Super Round with a 0-2 record.

Jorge Porta doubled off submarine pitcher Samuel Steigert, and Daniel Aguilar scored the game's first run. The home plate umpire initially called an out, and the play underwent an on-field review.

Colombia made it 2-0 on another double by Roger Caraballo.

Colombia opened the score in the bottom of the third.

A home run by Jair Camargo made it 6-0.

Colombia added a run in the fifth. Santiago Florez pitched five innings for the win.
