Juan Castro to manage the Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League

The former MLB infielder led the Mexican National Team to a historic qualification to the Olympics.

The Naranjeros de Hermosillo of the Mexican Pacific League (LMP, Liga Mexicana del Pacifico) replaced manager Juan Navarrete with Juan Gabriel Castro.

Castro, 49, managed the Mexican National Team to a bronze medal in the WBSC Premier12 2019, which gave the sport in his country its historic first-ever qualification to the Olympics.

As a player, he enjoyed a 17-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career and coached in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies organizations.

Under new manager Benji Gil, Mexico finished sixth in the Tokyo 2020 Games with a 0-3 record.

The Naranjeros are currently in sixth place in the 10-team LMP. They posted so far a 15-15 record and are five games behind the first-place Mayos de Navojoa.

A club press release thanked Navarrete for leading the Naranjeros to a league final and helping develop the young players who represent the core of the team.

Hermosillo has 16 LMP titles and lost the 2020-21 final to the Tomateros de Culiacan. The Naranjeros call home the Sonora Stadium, which was the main venue of the recently played WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup.
