The inaugural Junior Pan American Games baseball and softball events wrapped up yesterday with the gold medal games in both disciplines. Host Colombia grabbed the gold medal in baseball, after a 6-3 win over the Dominican Republic, while USA topped Mexico, 10-0, in the softball final.
Baseball
Colombia’s U-23 National Baseball Team defeated the Dominican Republic in the gold medal game to win the Cali 2021 gold medal game in baseball. The Dominican squad took the lead scoring a run in the first three innings, but a Leandro Emiliani three-run homer tied the game for the host team.
Luis Moreno was the winner of the game pitching four scoreless innings in relief. Carlos Arroyo scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, after a balk.
In the bronze medal game, Cuba topped world champions Venezuela, 9-1, and completed the podium.

Softball
The USA Softball U-18 Women’s National Team claimed the gold medal at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games after a 10-0 win over Mexico in the final of the competition. Valerie Cagle tossed a four-inning perfect game while striking out 8 of the 12 batters she faced.
“I am so proud of these athletes for their grit throughout our quest to the podium,” said U-18 Women’s National Team Head Coach, Kyla Holas. “They have met every challenge faced before them and really came together as a team. We are very appreciative of the opportunity to compete in the Junior Pan American Games and can’t thank Barranquilla enough for their support during our stay. We’re looking forward to heading to Lima for another great week of softball.”
Puerto Rico completed the podium, after winning the bronze medal game against Peru, 3-1.
USA, Mexico, Puerto RIco, Peru and Colombia now head to Lima, Peru, to compete at the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup starting on Monday 6 December.
