Korea close Opening Round with 13-0 win against Canada

Leading 2-0 after five innings, the world No. 3 exploded against Canada’s bullpen with 11 runs in the sixth inning to secure the win.

In what was supposed to be the first game of the tournament, Korea earned their fourth win of the Opening Round and closed Group A with a 4-1 record. The third-ranked nation in the world topped Canada, 13-0 in six innings, in a make-up game dropped into the schedule on the rest day after being postponed last Friday due to bad weather.

With Korea leading 2-0 after five innings, the five-time champions exploded against Canada’s bullpen with 11 runs in the sixth inning to secure the win, capped by a grand slam off the bat of Daeseon Jeong. Korea sent 16 hitters to the batter’s box.

Jeongwoon Kim got the win for Korea, in his second relief appearance of the tournament. He allowed two hits and a walk in two innings of work, while striking out one. The losing pitcher for Canada was Felix Morin, who tossed five innings and gave up four hits and two runs.

Daeseon Jeong had a stellar game, going 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a double, five RBI and three runs scored. He’s hitting .750 for the tournament (6-for-8).

With the win, Korea finished the Opening Round in second place in Group A, with a 4-1 record, and move to the Super Round with an even 1-1 record. Canada ended in fifth place with a 1-4 record and will play the Placement Round.
