LG Twins overcome KT Wiz in five, win their first Korean Series in 29 years

After losing the opening game, the Seoul-based team won four straight. WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2008 hero Ji-hwan Oh earned MVP honours. Over 106,000 spectators attended the five games.

The LG Twins defeated the KT Wiz in game 5 in a packed Jamsil Stadium in Seoul, 6-2, to claim the 2024 Korean Series. It's their first title since 1994. The Twins last appearance in the Korean Series dates back to 2002 when they lost against the Samsung Lions in six games.

Twins captain Ji-Hwan Oh, who combined three home runs and eight RBIs, was honoured as the series MVP. Oh was a key player on the Korean team that won the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2008. He also participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The LG Twins took the lead in the bottom of the third when the Tokyo 2020 Olympics All-World Team centre fielder Hae-Min Park hit a two-RBI double off starter Young-Pyo Ko.

As manager Kyoung-youb Youm had hoped, American hurler Casey Kelly posted a quality start, allowing one run over five innings. Kelly, a 34-year-old former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, is in his fifth Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) season and struggled early in the season, making the Twins consider replacing him; he also pitched well in the series opener despite not getting a decision.

The Twins opened the score in the bottom of the fifth, making the most of an error and two wild pitches with two runs scored.

The KT Wiz took the lead in the series and kept fighting hard through Game Three.

The Twins recovered from a bad start by Won-tae Choi, who threw only 20 pitches, 12 for balls, and came back from a 4-0 deficit to win Game Two on a go-ahead home run by catcher Dong-won Park.

Game Three also had a dramatic finish. After closer Go Woo-suk, also a Tokyo 2020 Olympian, blew a save opportunity, the LG Twins staged a ninth-inning rally to take the lead in the series.

All the games of the Korean Series were sold out. The three games played at Jamsil Stadium attracted 71,100 spectators, while 35,200 people witnessed the two games played at Suwon Baseball Stadium.
