Mexico City is one of the world's most famous cities and one of the biggest. In the greater Mexico City area, the population surpassed 20 million people in 2020, making it the sixth-largest metropolitan area and the biggest Spanish-speaking city.
The city is full of fantastic tourist destinations. Among them are the historic Castillo de Chapultepec, the iconic Angel de la Independencia, the Frida Kahlo museum and the Zócalo, where the Baseball5 World Cup 2022 will take place from 7-11 November.
Mexico City was founded in 1325 as Tenochtitlan and was renamed Ciudad de Mexico in 1521. It was known as Distrito Federal since 1824 before being called Ciudad de Mexico again since 2016.
The city fell in love with baseball a long time ago. Since 1940 Mexico City has been the home of Diablos Rojos, the most successful team in Liga Mexicana de Beisbol history, with 16 titles. Diablos Rojos play their games in the fantastic Alfredo Harp Helú stadium inaugurated in 2019.
Softball also has a strong following with the Mexico softball national team having played some preparation games in the capital city before embarking on their Tokyo 2020 Olympic campaign last year.
