MSWC 2019: Cleary fans 13 as Canada edges Czech Republic in Quarter-Finals

Sean Cleary fanned 13 in six innings of work, to guide Canada to a 4-0 victory over host Czech Republic and qualify to the Semi-Finals of the Men’s Softball World Championship. Tomorrow Canada will take on Argentina.

Sean Cleary fanned 13 in six innings of work, to guide Canada to a 4-0 victory over host Czech Republic and qualify to the Semi-Finals of the Men’s Softball World Championship udefeated. Tomorrow Canada will take on Argentina.

Canada scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Mathieu Roy hit a line drive triple into the left-center field gap, and later scored on an RBI single by third baseman Derek Mayson.

In the bottom of the sixth Canada added some insurance runs to the scoreboard to give Cleary a 4-run led to work the last inning. Pinch runner Tyler Pauli scored from second with an RBI single by Shane Boland to center field. And then pinch hitter Bryan Abrey hit a hard line drive to right field that was misplayed by Marek Maly, and allowed Abrey to round the bases to make it 4-0.

One batter later the young Czech star Michal Holobradek was pulled after 5.1 innings of work, allowing 4 runs, 7 hits and 1 walk, with 3 strikeouts. The right hander received a standing ovation as he exited the game.

In the top of the seventh Devon McCoullough replaced Cleary in the circle, and retired the side with two strikeouts and a line drive to shortstop Shane Boland who gloved it for the game-ending out.

Canada will take on Argentina in the semi-final, at 19:30.

Hansen’s 18 strikeouts lead Denmark past Cuba

Denmark defeated Cuba 3-0 and finished in the 9th place of the Men’s Softball World Championship. Kim Hansen went the distance and fanned 18 to shutout the Cuban team.
