International Women's Day: New women’s softball league announced in Colombia

“We aim to promote and boost women in sport in Colombia and recover Colombian women’s softball’s position in the world rankings,” said FCS President, Eduin Diaz.

In recognition of International Women's Day on 8 March, the Colombian Softball Federation (Federacion Colombiana de Softbol, FCS) announced the creation of a new women’s softball league in the country, named Liga Especial Softbol Femenino.

A total of four teams, from four different cities - Juventud Heroica from Cartagena; All Stars from Barranquilla; Mariscales from Sincelejo and Aguilas-Pumas from Monteria - will participate in the new tournament from 19 March to 22 May. The tournament will be live-streamed by Claro Sports.

“We aim to promote and boost women in sport in Colombia and recover Colombian women’s softball’s position in the world rankings,” said FCS President, Eduin Diaz. “We want to prepare our national team for the Bolivarian Games in June, and also for the Pan American Championship, qualifier for the Pan American Games, the Central American and Caribbean Games and the World Cup.”

The new league will open with a regular season, where each participating team will play three game series both at home and on the road, for a total of 24 games. After that, the teams will play a final four in Sincelejo, with the top-two teams moving to the finals.

Each team will be composed of 20 players and can include four foreign athletes.

The tournament is recognised and supported by the Colombian Sport Ministry and the Colombian Olympic Committee.
