New Zealand places fifth at local tournament in Auckland, as team preps for WBSC U-18 Women's Softball World Cup

The junior national team participated in the Wayne Roper Memorial Tournament during the weekend.

With a record of 1 win and 4 losses, the New Zealand U-18 Women’s National Softball Team finished in fifth place at the Wayne Roper Memorial Tournament played last weekend in Auckland, New Zealand. The senior event helped the Junior Black Sox in their preparation for the top youth international softball event in the world - the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup - which will be played from 28 August to 5 September 2021 in Lima, Peru.

The Junior Black Sox won in their debut against Howick, 3-2, and lost to Otahuhu by a score of 7-2 to finish in second place in Group A. However, the national team couldn’t grab a win in the playoffs, losing three games in a row, falling to the Bears (7-0), Auckland Marist (9-8) and Howick (5-3). Otahuhu won the tournament with a 3-2 win over Auckland Marist.

New Zealand, ranked number 16 in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Ranking, is one of 16 qualified teams for the WBSC U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup, to be played in Lima, Peru, from 28 August to 5 September. The rest of the teams are No. 1 USA, No. 2 Japan, No. 3 Canada, No. 4 Puerto Rico, No. 5 Mexico, No. 6 Chinese Taipei, No. 7 China, No. 8 Australia, No. 9 Netherlands, No. 10 Italy, No. 11 Philippines, No. 12 Czech Republic, No. 19 Peru, world No. 26 South Africa and No. 48 Colombia.
