The baseball and softball world has lost one of its leaders.

Nigerian Baseball and Softball Association (NBSA) President William Boyd, who was one of the founding members of the national governing body, passed away on 16 June. He was 71 years old.

Nigerian players and officials are suspending all baseball and softball activities in the country for seven days to honour Boyd's memory.

Dr Boyd was among the founding members of the NBSA in 1989 and served as the first secretary-general, a position he held for 16 years. He was elected as NBSA president in October 2020.

"He greatly contributed to ensuring that the sporting organisation experience a rebirth," NBSA said in a statement. "He was a team player and true believer in the ideals of strong and vibrant organisation."

He also served as an assistant secretary-general (1993-1997) and the secretary-general (1997-2001) of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.

In addition to his role as sports leader in Nigeria, Boyd was a medical practitioner with specialisation in sports medicine.
