Olympian Yuruby Alicart returns to Venezuelan Women’s National Softball Team aiming to lead new generation

After four years of abscence, the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games veteran announced she is back with her national team for the World Cup Americas Qualifier.

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games veteran Yuruby Alicart announced her return to the Venezuelan Women’s National Softball Team to play the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Americas Qualifier, to be played from 12-19 November in Guatemala.

Alicart, who finished the Olympic Games 2008 with a .333 batting average and a home run, made the announcement through her social media accounts. “To hear Venezuela’s national anthem in any country around the world is the best for anyone born in this country,” she said.

The second base was part of a golden generation in Venezuela, along with Maria Soto, Mariangee Bogado and Denise Fuenmayor, that qualified Venezuela for the country's first and only Olympic Games in 2008; that finished fifth place in the Women’s Softball World Cup 2010 in Caracas, and claimed the silver medal at the Rio 2007 Pan Am Games.

Alicart, 38, said that she’s willing to lead the young Venezuelan team at this stage of her career, guiding and supporting the new generation of players. “Everyone’s desire in the team is to keep working to reach our goals,” she said.

World No. 14 Venezuela will open the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Americas Qualifier in Group A, playing against No. 1 USA, No. 5 Puerto Rico, No. 16 Brazil, No. 48 Argentina, No. 57 El Salvador and Costa Rica.
