Olympic bronze medal winner Julio Rodriguez is the American League Rookie of the Year

The Seattle Mariners center fielder, who played for the Dominican Republic at the Tokyo 2020 Games, received 29 first-place votes in the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot.

Olympic bronze medallist Julio Rodriguez earned one of two Major League Baseball (MLB) Rookie of the Year Awards

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America voted Rodriguez the American League 2022 Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year.

Rodriguez commented on the award on MLB Network while sharing the news with his family.

The Seattle Mariners star outfielder added a comment through his Twitter profile: "What a year!"

Rodriguez received 29 out of 44 first-place votes and 148 points. Second-place finisher Adley Rutschman (Baltimore Orioles) totalled 68 points.

After representing the Dominican Republic in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the new American League Rookie of the Year, who will turn 22 on 29 December, made his MLB debut on Opening Day 2022. He appeared in 132 games for the Seattle Mariners, going 145-for-511, a .284 batting average, with 28 home runs and 75 RBIs. He led the Mariners to their first postseason appearance since 2001.

Michael Harris II (Atlanta Braves) earned Rookie of the Year honours in the National League.
