Olympic bronze medalist Julio Rodriguez earns MLB Rookie of the Month, Player of the Week honours

Rodriguez suited up for the Dominican Republic National Baseball Team in the Olympic qualifiers and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where the nation won its first medal in baseball/team sport.

Major League Baseball (MLB) named Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Julio Rodriguez the American League Rookie of the Month and the American League Player of the Week.

The 21-year-old Dominican slugger is putting together an All-Star season.

After making his MLB debut on opening day, 8 April, Rodriguez appeared in 82 games at center field for the Seattle Mariners. He went 86-for-310, .277 batting average, with 15 home runs and 43 runs batted in (RBIs).

Rodriguez signed for the Mariners as a 16-year-old international free agent in July 2017. He received a US$ 1.75 million bonus.

He was playing at the Double-A level when world No. 7 Dominican Republic added him to the national team for the WBSC Americas Olympic Qualifier in June 2021.

At the Tokyo 2020 Games, Rodriguez helped the Dominican Republic win the country's first Olympic medal in a team sport, defeating Korea, 10-6, in the bronze medal game.
