Olympic qualifier: Hector Borg to replace Fernando Tatis as Dominican Republic National Team Baseball manager

The 35-year old former minor leaguer is currently the San Francisco Giants Director of Development for Latin America.

The Dominican Republic Baseball Federation (FEDOBE, Federación Dominicana de Béisbol) announced that Fernando Tatis would step down from his role as the National Team manager. A FEDOBE press release cited "personal reasons" for the decision.

FEDOBE has named Héctor Borg to replace him.

Borg was born in 1985 in San Pedro de Macoris and is currently the Latin America Director of Development for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB).

A backup minor league infielder in his playing days, Borg appeared in 83 games over two seasons (2005-2007) in the Giants' farm system. He played in the independent South Coast League in 2007.

His coaching career began in 2011 with Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League. In the summer, he served as a coach on the San Francisco club in the Dominican Summer League.

Borg's most recent experience as a manager dates back to 2019 and the Giants' Class A advanced club.

He will take the field with Dominican Republics's 40-player preliminary roster on Tuesday, 27 April, at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium in Santo Domingo.

World No. 10 Dominican Republic will compete in group A of the WBSC Americas Qualifier to the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020, which will be staged in the Palm Beaches and St. Lucie Counties, Florida, from 31 May to 5 June.

Group A also includes: World No. 2 USA, No. 11 Puerto Rico and No. 15 Nicaragua.
