Tokyo Olympic Softball: Day 5 Historical Preview

Japan-United States, Canada-Italy and Mexico-Australia conclude the qualification phase in Tokyo.

Games 13, 14 and 15, scheduled for Monday, 26 July, will conclude the round-robin of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic softball tournament.

Japan - United States

  • The two teams to win a gold medal in softball at the Olympic Games are Japan (2008) and United States (1996, 2000, 2004).
  • Japan has won two of their seven Olympic games versus United States. Aside from the gold medal game in 2008, Japan defeated USA 2-1 in the group stage in 2000.
  • USA's defeat against Japan in the Olympic gold medal game in 2008 came after they had defeated the Japanese twice earlier in that tournament: 7-0 in the group stage and 4-1 in the qualifying semi-finals (in the ninth inning).
  • Japan and United States met in the final of each of the past seven world championships. USA won the title five times (2002, 2006, 2010, 2016, 2018) and Japan came out on top twice (2012, 2014).
  • The most recent world championship final between Japan and United States was a 7-6 triumph for USA in 2018 (in the 10th inning). Winning that title earned United States their place at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Canada - Italy

  • Canada defeated Italy in the group stage of the Olympic Games in 2000 (7-1) and 2004 (1-0). Neither team progressed to the next stage in either tournament.
  • Canada have only won more Olympic games against Chinese Taipei (3) than versus Italy (2).
  • Canada beat Italy at the world championships in 2006, 2012, 2016 and 2018. In only one of those four victories did they concede a run, 3-1 in the champions round in 2016.
  • Italy recorded a 1-0 win versus Canada in the group stage of the world championship in 2002.
  • Italy have lost all their games at Tokyo 2020. They have yet to score their first run (0-13).

Mexico - Australia

  • Australia defeated Mexico 2-1 in the eighth inning in the qualification match for the semi-finals at the world championships in 2018.
  • Australia also beat Mexico in the group stage of the world championships in 2012 (10-2) and the round-robin stage of the 2017 World Cup (6-0).
  • Mexico recorded a 2-0 win against Australia in the eighth inning in the group stage of the world championship in 2016.
  • Mexico won their last match at the 2020 Olympic Games 5-0 versus Italy, marking their first-ever softball win in the Olympic Games.
