Panama finish in eighth place after come from behind win over Canada

Eric Guevara tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homer to left field.

World No. 13 Panama concluded their participation in the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup with a 5-2, come-from-behind, win over Canada to clinch eighth place, their best result since finishing seventh in 2012. Eric Guevara tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homer to left field.

World No. 12 Canada took the lead with runs in the first and third innings. Both runs were produced by Sam White with a grounder and a run-scoring single.

However, Panama scored five unanswered runs to claim the victory. An RBI single by Yeremy Lescano in the third and Guevara’s homer in the fourth evened the score, and a three-run fifth, capped by an RBI-double by Guevara, put Panama in front.

Andres Silvera earned the win for Panama in five innings of work, striking out four while giving up four hits and two runs.

With the win, Panama, who finished ninth in the 2019 edition, finished in eighth place while Canada, whose previous worst finish in a WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup was 10th in 1992, could finish anywhere between ninth and 11th depending on other results on Saturday.
