Professional Baseball season may be postponed in Venezuela

The COVID-19 outbreak has spoiled the planning. The opening day may be delayed

The Professional Baseball League of Venezuela (LVBP-Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional) issued a statement regarding the 2020-2021 season, due to begin in late October.

"We have the duty to state very responsibly that organizing the sport's event that the Venezuelan people most anticipate is becoming increasingly complex."

LVBP is dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak and with the fact that two of the eight clubs, the Tigres de Aragua and the Navegantes del Magallanes, as of now wouldn't be able to use players under contract with Major League Baseball (MLB) organizations as a consequence of sanctions imposed to Venezuela by the United States.

"Our intention is and will continue to be organizing the season. Playing baseball is the reason why we exist," the statement added.

On a final note, LVBP wrote: "The respect we have shown to baseball fans since January 1946 forces us to make decisions consistent with our role and responsibilities."
