The Australian Baseball Federation is pleased to announce Simone Wearne as Manager of our National Women’s Team for 2013 & 2014.
In a first for baseball in Australia, the sport will have a female leading our elite female players; an integral progression for our women’s High Performance pathway.
Australia’s most decorated female ball player, Simone (31) became the first female and youngest member to join the Hall of Fame in 2012, cementing her place as a trailblazer for women’s baseball in this country.
Speaking humbly of her two-year appointment, Simone acknowledged the growth that has been achieved with women’s baseball under previous Manager John Gaynor;
“It is a huge honour to be named Head Coach of the National Team. Johnny has done a huge amount for women’s baseball across the country over a number of years now, especially the National Program, and I hope that I can continue adding to the great contribution he has made. He has taught me a lot, and I am very grateful for all that he has done for me as a coach and a player”.
Simone retired from elite competition in 2008, following ten years of State and National representative baseball. In 2010 she was appointed as Assistant/Pitching Coach of the National Women’s Team and in 2012 was appointed Manager of the National U18 Women’s team and led them to a silver medal at the Phoenix Cup in Hong Kong in January this year.
As an eleven-time Australian representative, Simone is very familiar with the depth of players and also challenges that come with the job;
“I’m committed to ensuring the future of this team is a bright and successful one, and have no doubt that with the calibre of players knocking on the door for National selection, together with an excellent group of veterans; there are good times ahead for the Australian Women’s Baseball Team”.
Simone will now work with the ABF High Performance Department and other National Coaching Staff to appoint the Assistant Coaches and Executive Officer for 2013/14.
