A total of 13 veterans from the 2019 World Cup winning team roster will travel to Auckland vying to repeat the world title.

World No. 1 Argentina unveiled on Thursday their 16-man roster aiming to repeat their 2019 title winning performance at the WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup 2022, set to begin on 26 November in Auckland, New Zealand.

Argentina, who became world champions for the first time three years ago, share Group A with world No. 5 Czech Republic, No. 6 and host New Zealand, No. 7 USA, No. 12 Cuba and No. 21 Philippines.

The players to represent Argentina are:

  1. Santiago Carril (OF)
  2. Federico Eder (IF)
  3. Manuel Godoy (IF)
  4. Román Godoy (P)
  5. Martín González (P)

Gold medal-winning head coach Julio Gamarci named 13 veterans from the 2019 team that shocked the world in Prague with a historic world championship run. The experienced roster includes only one newcomer (Retamar).

Mata, who recorded a 1.48 ERA in 28.1 innings during the 2019 World Championship (including the 10 innings of the final against Japan), will lead Argentina’s three-man pitching staff in Auckland. Offensively, the team is packed with veteran bats like Motroni, Carril, Eder, Manuel Godoy and captain Montero.

Argentina won the Pan American Championship on home soil in April this year, reaching the peak of the WBSC Men’s Softball World Ranking for the first time.
