German Softball Bundesliga semifinals open Saturday

The 2020 German softball season is now down to four teams. The playoffs will begin on Saturday, 26 September, with the top two teams of the north and south divisions playing for a spot in the final.

The Softball Bundesliga, the sport’s top league in Germany, close out its shortened regular season and is set to begin the playoffs on Saturday, 26 September. Wesseling Vermins, Freising Grizzlies, Bonn Capitals and Karlsruhe Cougars are still in the hunt for the national title.

The eight-team regular season lasted only seven weeks this year, as the season didn’t start until the middle of August because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The semi-finals will be played in a best-of-three format on 26-27 September, with the winners advancing to the best-of-five finals from 3-11 October.

Last year’s finalists, the Wesseling Vermins and Freising Grizzlies, captured the division titles in the north and the south, with runners-up Bonn Capitals and Karlsruhe Cougars also advancing to the semi-finals. Wesseling will take on Karlsruhe in the semi-finals, while Freising will play Bonn.

Softball season in Germany had also national team activity, with the senior national team playing a six-game, WBSC-sanctioned series against the Netherlands, which ended on 20 September. The orange team swept their neighbours.

The Ben’s Baseball Bundesliga will also start the playoffs on Saturday.
