South African Baseball is mourning the passing of Pastor Edwin Bennett. He was 73 years old.
"He was an enthusiastic sportsman, coach and administrator in various sports codes and a very humble and dedicated servant to South African Baseball for the good part of 30 years," said Marc Moreau, the President of the South African Baseball Union.
"For the last few years, Edwin has been the Development Manager of Major League Baseball (MLB) and spent much of his time doing what he loved most: developing and promoting baseball in schools and particularly in rural areas."
Bennett was a pastor at the House of 'Isa Ministries. He was also an anti-apartheid activist and had strong connections to the Black Community. When the South African Baseball Union approached him in the first days of majority rule in 1992, Bennett felt like baseball had worked as an extension of the anti-apartheid struggle.
World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) President Riccardo Fraccari, who sent his deepest condolences to the Bennett family and South African Baseball, said Bennett "will be greatly missed," and was a "great friend and a big supporter of baseball in Africa, especially for the youth".
