Spain: Baseball, softball leagues to resume 19 September

The softball league will resume the season after more than six months of interruption due to COVID-19, while the baseball competition will finally celebrate opening day.

The Royal Spanish Baseball Softball Federation (Real Federación Española de Béisbol y Softbol, RFEBS) announced that the country’s baseball and softball leagues will be operational again on 19 September.

The Spanish Superior Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes) approved the return of activities of non-professional sports, with the RFEBS deciding to resume official baseball and softball activity in the country.

The Spanish Softball League (Liga de Softbol División de Honor) celebrated its opening weekend on 8-9 March, before the interruption of all sport activities in the country due to COVID-19. More than six months later, the eight-team league will resume its calendar. Viladecans Sercotel, Antorcha Valencia and CBS Rivas are the only undefeated squads with two wins in as many games. Sant Boi and Dridma Rivas split their two-game series, while Fenix Valencia, Miralbueno Zaragoza and Cambre lost their two games.

Last year, Rivas swept Atletico San Sebastian in the final to win the national championship, closing a perfect 25-0 season.

The Spanish baseball season will finally open on 19 September. A total of 10 teams will compete in the league: the Valencia Astros, Béisbol Navarra, Viladecans, Antorcha Valencia, Barcelona, Rivas, Sant Boi, Miralbueno Zaragoza, Inazio Bilbao Bizkaia and the Tenerife Marlins.

The Tenerife Marlins will open the season as the three-time defending baseball champions of Spain.

Scores, schedule, stats and standings of the Spanish baseball and softball leagues are found on the website of the national governing body, at rfebs.es.
