Tunisian Baseball5 championship to target youth with 240-team national tourney

The plan was discussed in a meeting between National Federation President Saber Jlajla and the Director-General of the Ministry of Youth and Sport Kamel El Arbi.

Tunisia's 2021 Baseball5 National Championship has the goal to grow the sport in the country by involving as many as 240 teams, 10 of those representing the Tunisian Governorates.

This year's edition, which will take play in May, follows the 2020 Baseball5 National Championship which was played under Covid-19 conditions and the inaugural edition in 2019, which featured seven teams.

Saber Jlajla, the president of the Tunisian Baseball and Softball Federation (FTBS, Fédération Tunisienne de Baseball et Softball), and the country's Director-General of the Ministry of Youth and Sport Kamel El Arbi recently met to confirm the tournament's expansion. FTBS Technical Director Sofienne Riahi also participated in the meeting.

FTBS and the Ministry of Youth and Sport also discussed the calendar of several Baseball5 clinics across Tunisia's national youth centers, while overviewing the competition calendar between these youth centers.

Baseball5 heating up baseball/softball world

Baseball5, which requires just a ball and can be played in multiple settings -- both indoor and outdoor -- has been helping to push the global development of the sport, particularly in places like Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Recent development activities have taken place in other African countries, including Benin, Egypt and Burkina Faso.
