U-23 Baseball World Cup: Venezuela beats Czech Republic to conclude Opening Round

It took an extra day and extra innings to complete the Opening Round at the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup® 2016 with No. 7 Venezuela eventually prevailing over No. 14 Czech Republic, 13-12 in 10 innings.

MONTERREY, Mexico — It took an extra day and extra innings to complete the Opening Round at the WBSC U-23 Baseball World Cup® 2016 with No. 7 Venezuela eventually prevailing over No. 14 Czech Republic, 13-12 in 10 innings.

Jonathan Xavier Linares Rivas’ single to center with two out in the bottom of the 10th scored Juan Jose Vegas, while an error allowed Francisco Javier Martinez to score the winning run.

Venezuela used eight different pitchers with Leonardo Jose Mota getting credit for the win, while Štepán Havlícek took the loss with both teams combining for 25 runs, 24 hits and 10 errors.

Henry Pastor Rodriguez drove in four runs for Venezuela on the strength of a double and triple.  Michal Zyma homered in the loss for the Czech Republic.

Both countries will begin play in the Consolation Round (7th to 12th Place) on Thursday.
