Venezuela launches Baseball5 league

Federation president Aracelis Leon said the goal is "the organization and development of a high-level competition to attract talents for future international competitions such as Pan American events and WBSC World Cups."

The Venezuelan Baseball Federation (FEVEBEISBOL) launched the first edition of the Venezuelan Baseball5 League. The league is the natural development of the eight-team National Championship played in October 2022.

Aracelis Leon, FEVEBEISBOL and WBSC Americas' president announced to the local press during an event hosted by the National Olympic Committee that the goal of the Baseball5 National Championship is "the organization and development of a high-level competition to attract talent for future international competitions such as Pan American events and WBSC World Cups."

Leon confirmed that Ángel Machile Delgado, a member of the Federation's Board, will serve as the league's president.

Delgado said the Baseball5 league is one more step forward in the Sembrando Beisbol (spreading baseball) initiative.

"The commitment we have at the national level needs to be implemented by activity at the local level. You start from your parish, your community, to excel nationally and internationally."

World No. 5 Venezuela introduced Baseball5 in 2018 through a seminar in Caracas. The game had similarities with Pelotica de Goma, a street game Venezuelan kids have played for decades.

Barquisimeto and Caracas hosted the first tournaments in 2019. The same year, Venezuela finished second at the Baseball5 Open de Las Americas and introduced the five-on-five version of baseball/softball in the School Games.

Venezuela finished fourth in the inaugural WBSC Baseball5 World Cup last year and will organise the WBSC Americas Youth Baseball5 World Cup Qualifier in July.
