Venezuela reveals national team roster ahead of final Olympic baseball qualifier

Only 13 players are back from the recent Americas qualifier squad, with former MLB World Series winner Anibal Sanchez not on the squad.

The Venezuelan Baseball Federation revealed their national team players ahead of the WBSC Baseball Final Qualifier, which will send the sixth and final baseball team to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Manager José Alguacil revealed 27 players, including 4 catchers, but one player will need to be cut to finalize the team's 26-man roster for the qualifier. Only 13 players are back from the roster that earned third place in the Americas qualifier earlier this month. Alguacil left out also Major League Baseball (MLB) World Series-winning pitcher Anibal Sanchez.

The roster features massive MLB experience in infielder Amarist (702 career games), catcher Chirinos (602 games), infielders Hernan Perez (651 games) and Luis Sardiñas (182 games), and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez (394 games). Catcher Wilson Ramos is a former MLB All-Star.

PITCHERS (12): Henry Centeno, Harold Chirinos, Jhonathan Diaz, Yapson Gomez, Erick Leal, Arcenio Leon, Luis Madero, Oddanier Mosqueda, Williams Perez, Pedro Rodriguez, Wilking Rodriguez, Danny Rondon

CATCHERS (4): Robinson Chirinos, Arvincent Perez, Wilson Ramos, Dennys Ortega

INFIELDERS (7): Alexi Amarista, Luis Castro, Sean Mendoza, Christian Perez, Hernan Perez, Luis Sardiñas, Engelb Vielma

OUTFIELDERS (4) Gorkys Hernandez, Alexander Palma, Diego Rincones, Danry Vasquez

Alguacil's coaching staff includes bench coach Carlos Garcia, pitching coach Mike Alvarez, third base coach Liu Rodriguez, first base coach and hitting coach Wilfredo Romero, bullpen coach Nestor Rojas and assistant coach Eduardo Rios.

World No. 8 Venezuela will battle for the final spot in the Olympic baseball tournament against No. 9 Netherlands and No. 10 Dominican Republic from 22 to 26 June at Estadio de Béisbol Hermanos Serdán in Puebla, Mexico.

Venezuela dropped their warm-up game against world No. 5 Mexico, 4-3, on Sunday.
