WBCQ: Israel downs South Africa in Florida Opener

Jupiter, Florida. Israel had a strong start into the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Jupiter, Florida. They scored six of their seven runs in the last three innings of a 7-3 win over South Africa. The lone African participant in the event is now one loss away from being ousted from the double-elimination competition.

Jupiter, Florida. Israel had a strong start into the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Jupiter, Florida. They scored six of their seven runs in the last three innings of a 7-3 win over South Africa. The lone African participant in the event is now one loss away from being ousted from the double-elimination competition.

Nate Freiman hit a pair of solo homeruns to spark Israel’s offense. Charles Cutler drove in three runs. On the mound six different pitchers took the mound, as starter Eric Berger ended up with the win as he pitched three innings of scoreless two-hit ball.

South Africa’s offense didn’t wake up until the ninth inning, when they rallied for three runs. Starter Dylan Unsworth struck out six in six strong innings, allowing just six hits and a run, but still taking the loss.

On Thursday Spain and France will enter the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Jupiter, Florida, while the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Regensburg, Germany gets under way with a matchup between Great Britain and Canada.
