WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup Day 2: USA, Japan and Brazil lead groups with two wins from two

World No. 1 Japan and nine-time champions USA confirm their status as favourites, Brazil earn a second comeback win and surprise as co-leaders of Group A.

Inclement weather made the highlights on Day 2 of the XXX WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup. The morning games were delayed after heavy thunderstorms hit Sarasota and Bradenton in Florida, USA.

Game 10 between South Africa and the Netherlands will be rescheduled on 14 September.

The other four games were all played and confirmed nine-time champions USA in Group A and world No. 1 Japan in Group B as the teams to beat.

After coming from behind to beat South Africa, world No. 25 Brazil did the same against Canada and is now on top of Group A with the hosts.

Panama arrived in Florida on Saturday and will start their campaign on Sunday 11 September against Japan at 19:00 (local time). Their game against Australia on Saturday was postponed to 14 September.

Day 2 Results

USA-Korea 8-3

The United States allowed only one hit and their lineup combined 10, including two home runs. Korea proved no match for the hosts.

Kevin McGonigle homered to put the US ahead and end the game of Korea's starter Myung-geun Park

Reliever Young-Cheol Yoon struggled with control and walked home the second USA run.

USA starter Christian Rodriguez showed some heat.

Korea tied it in the bottom of the second thanks to a base hit by Jeongmin Kim.

Catcher Blake Mitchell homered in the top of the third and gave the US a new lead.

Gavin Grahovac cleared the bases, the US broke the score open.

The US extended the gap to five runs in the top of the sixth.

Japan-Mexico 4-1

Kazuki Kozai and Haruya Miyahara limited Mexico's lineup to four hits, and Japan scored all the runs they needed in the first.

Samurai Japan didn't waste time and scored three runs on three hits against Angel Sanchez in the first.

Shogo Asano homered in the fifth to extend Japan's lead to 4-0.

The Mexico lineup had only four hits and scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth.

Chinese Taipei-Italy 2-1

Left fielder Hsin Chiu hit a walk off base hit off Davide Montanari in the top of the seventh and defending champions Chinese Taipei beat Italy, 2-1.

The start of the game is currently on hold due to a heavy thunderstorm

The game started at 17:15.

Good defense by Italy's Alessandro Laise in the bottom of the first.

Minor leaguer Alessandro Ercolani gets out of the inning with a bases loaded strike out.

Yi Lei Sun hit a ground-rule double, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.

Nino Annunziata got to reliever Po Chun Lin and tied the game at one in the top of the sixth.

Left fielder Hsin Chiu got to reliever Davide Montanari with an RBI single and walked it off for Chinese Taipei.

Brazil-Canada 3-2

A two-out bases-loaded single by second baseman Augusto Borges off reliever Jack Pineau gave Brazil their second consecutive comeback win. Canada took a 2-1 lead within four outs from victory.

Canada took an early 1-0 lead. After one inning the game was delayed by rain.

The game started over at 15:45.

Canada leads 2-1 after four inning but Brazil is in the game.

A bases loaded single by second baseman Augusto Borges takes Brazil ahead in the bottom of the sixth.
