Australia keeps its chances alive to reach the semi-finals at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup. On Wednesday they celebrated a lopsided 20-1 victory over Venezuela in a make-up game of Tuesday’s rainout at Telus Field. After both teams exchanged runs in the first, Australia blew things open with seven runs in the second.

12 more runs in the third and fourth combined turned the game into an offensive slugfest. The team from Down Under is now 3-2 in the tournament, while Venezuela dropped to 1-4. The South Americans already had lost 0-3 to Japan in the morning and played the second part of the twin bill.

Leadoff hitter Bronwyn Gell led the way, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored, as 11 different players crossed the plate for Australia. Katie Gaynor and Tahlia Wellington had three RBI apiece. Yusneir Rodriguez scored the lone Venezuelan run on a single by Ingrid Escobar.

On the mound Jacinda Barclay replaced starter Melinda Latimer in the top of the second, allowing two hits in three scoreless innings to pick up the win. Taylah Welch closed it out. Josefina Cumana surrendered six hits, seven runs (4 ER) and a walk in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.
