Women’s BWC: Canada dispatches Netherlands

Canada is remaining the lone undefeated at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton. They dispatched the Netherlands by a score of 19-2 on Tuesday evening at Telus Field. After taking a quick lead, the Maple Leafs blew the game wide open with nine runs in the fourth, tying Japan’s inning high from prior in the tournament. The lone European team in the event avoided the shutout in the fourth. It was the fifth win in the fifth game for the hosts, while the Dutch team stays winless.

The contest lacked the drama of Monday’s epic battle against Team USA and Canada decided things quickly. All nine players in the Canadian starting lineup scored at least two runs. Leadoff hitter Jenna Flannigan crossed the plate three times. Katherine Psota went 4-for-4 with three RBI. Minke Boll and Amber Dammers scored the runs for the Netherlands on a two-run double by Antal Roos.

On the mound Kara Sliwkanich got the start for Canada, cruising through three scoreless innings, issuing just one hit on a single by Amber Dammers in the second. She struck out four of the ten batters she faced. Dutch starter Claudia Kranendonk surrendered ten hits, 11 runs (9 ER) and two walks in three-plus innings, getting charged with the loss.
