Women’s BWC: Canada keeps clean Slate

On the second to last day of the first round host Canada improved to 6-0 to solidify first place at the V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup. The Maple Leafs downed Cuba 12-2 in six innings on Thursday evening. Six runs in the first gave Canada an early and commanding lead, putting them on the fast track to victory lane.

The big offensive star of the night was speedy second base Nicole Luchansky. She went 4-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI out of the leadoff spot. Nine different players scored for Canada. Stephanie Savoie, Rebecca Hartley and Jenna Flannigan had two RBI apiece. Yordanka Rodriguez and Dainaris Morales scored the two runs for Cuba.

Katherine Psota got the start for Canada, allowing just three hits in three innings of scoreless work. She struck out one. After her, Heidi Northcott and Brittany Chan pitched in and out of trouble to close it out. Yanet Martinez lasted just two outs in the first, getting charged with six runs on five hits for the loss.
