Women’s BWC: Chinese Taipei hands Cuba second Loss

The V IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup continued on Saturday morning with a 6-3 victory by Chinese Taipei over Cuba at Telus Field in Edmonton, Canada. Two runs apiece in the second, fourth and sixth lifted the Asians to their first victory in the tournament. They had lost to Canada on opening day. Cuba lost for the second time in as many days.

Two runs apiece in the second, fourth and sixth lifted the Asians to their first victory in the tournament. They had lost to Canada on opening day. Cuba lost for the second time in as many days.

A throwing error by Cuba’s second base Dayanna Batista gave Chinese Taipei a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning. The Caribbean squad was able to the tie the contest in the fourth on a RBI double by Yurismaris Baez and her run later in the frame on an error. But Chinese Taipei regained the two-run advantage right away, scoring twice in the bottom half of the same frame, again profiting of an error. Yaluani Cervantes brought Cuba within one run with a RBI single in the sixth, but Chinese Taipei added a pair of insurance runs by Shih Yun Lee and Chia Jou Lin to seal the deal.

Wen Ching Hsieh earned the win, pitching five solid innings. She allowed just two runs (1 ER) on four hits, striking out four. Nai Chia Chen closed it out. Lefty Lianni Rodriguez issued six runs (3 ER) on ten hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. She was charged with the loss.
