Women’s BWC: USA wins Exchange with Cuba

Getting rained out on Tuesday, Team USA and Cuba met again for another try at John Fry Park one day later. The two-time champion celebrated a 9-1 win, which sounds more lopsided as it was. The United States needed until the fourth inning to break a scoreless try and didn’t blow the score open until the last two frames. They are now 4-1 in the Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton. Cuba remains winless.

Malaika Underwood finally put the US on the board with a RBI single in the top of the fourth. A balk and a sac fly by Michelle Snyder made it 3-0 until the end of the frame. In the sixth they added two insurance runs on another sac fly by Snyder and a RBI single of Mackenzi Vandergeest. A pair of doubles by Donna Williams and Snyder in the seventh plated four runs to turn the game into a blowout. Snyder finished with five RBI. Underwood scored three times. Cuba was only able to avoid the shutout, when Dainaris Morales drove in Yurismaris Baez with a single in the sixth.

Otherwise the US pitching of Stacy Piagno, Jennifer Hunter, Marti Sementelli, Donna Williams and Kayla Bufardeci kept the Cuban bats in check. Hunter ended up with the win. Mabel Cuello did a good job for Cuba, issuing just three hits, three runs and four walks in 3 2/3 frames. However their offense couldn’t do anything and they lost their fifth game in the tournament.
