World Baseball Classic star Mike Trout surpasses Joe DiMaggio on all-time MLB home run list

"Anytime you pass or tie a great or even just be in the same conversation with a great, it's really special, especially another centre fielder," commented the Los Angeles Angels superstar.

World Baseball Classic star Mike Trout passed legendary Joe DiMaggio on the all-time home run list as he hit No. 362 on Wednesday, 24 May.

Trout hit a two-run homer off Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta. The Angels defeated the Red Sox 7-3.

"It means a lot," Trout said to MLB.com. "Anytime you pass or tie a great or even just be in the same conversation with a great, it's really special, especially another centre fielder."

Trout, 31, is now No. 85 on the list, four home runs shy of No. 84 Lance Berkman. Barry Bonds is the all-time home run leader with 762.

Joe DiMaggio (1914-1999) hit his 361st home run in 1951 at the age of 37.

Trout, named in 2018 as the best active baseball player by Sports Illustrated, signed in March 2019 a 12-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels worth US$426 million. He has played for the Angels since his MLB debut on 8 July 2011, earning three American League MVP Awards. As of 30 May 2023, he has appeared in 1458 games, recording 1,599 hits over 5,292 at-bats. He has a .302 career batting average.

Internationally, he made his debut in 2010, representing the United States at the Pan American Games. He appeared in seven games for the star-studded United States at the World Baseball Classic 2023 where world No. 1 Japan defeated No. 2 USA in the final.
