Yilian Tornes guides Granma to 42nd Women’s Softball Cuban National title

The 30-year old hurler was the MVP of the competition, finishing the season with a 0.00 ERA and 73 strikeouts, collecting eight wins.

A solo homer in the first inning off the bat of Leadnelis Sayas and a two-hit, seven-strikeout outing from Yilian Tornes propelled Granma to its 16th Cuban National Championship this past weekend, after a 1-0 win over Villa Clara in the final of the season. 

Led by Tornes, Granma finished the regular season with a 14-1 win-loss record. The 30-year old hurler was the MVP of the competition, finishing the season with a 0.00 ERA and 73 strikeouts, collecting eight wins. 

The team was received in Bayamo by provincial sports and government authorities after winning the title. 

Granma remains the winningest team in the history of the competition with 16 titles, followed by La Habana (12) and Villa Clara (8).

Currently, Cuba is No. 30 in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Rankings.
