Australian Lewis Thorpe has signed with the Minnesota Twins, living up to his reputation as a dangerous left-handed pitcher and serious Major League Baseball prospect.
Sixteen year old Thorpe is currently in camp at the MLB Australian Academy (MLBAAP) on the Gold Coast, honing his skill under the leadership of Australia’s most successful coaching staff, including five former major leaguers.
The Victorian native was surprised by his overnight signing with Aussie favourite the Twins.
“This means everything to me. It has been my dream since I was five to go and play baseball in America” said Thorpe during his academy warm-up this morning.
“Getting signed also means everything to my family; they have been my biggest support and I have made sure I put in the hard work on the field to be able to give back to them in return”.
Thorpe started playing baseball for his local Victorian team Greenhill Montmorency and has since progressed with selection in State and National sides where his performance on the mound captured the attention of international scouts and earned himself a reputation as a dangerous lefty.
Thorpe adds to the Aussie contingent at the Twins, with Liam Hendricks currently starting pitcher for the Minnesota MLB team.
