Zambia starts major Baseball5 development project

WBSC instructor Andrea D'Auria oversaw the educational phase in December. The best physical education teachers selected in six provinces will go through extensive education in early January. Local competitions will start in February and run through to March. A National Championship will be the final step.

The WBSC has approved a Baseball5 development project by the Zambia Baseball Softball Association (ZABSA), which is funded by Olympic Solidarity and part of the Development of the National Sports System (DNSS) projects in the country.

The Baseball5 project will develop through three different phases. The first is dedicated to education on the ground in the local provinces, the second will offer extensive educational programmes to a selected number of individuals and the third will introduce the country to a Baseball5 national competition.

WBSC instructor Andrea D'Auria visited six provinces in December, providing two-day clinics for physical education teachers in Chipata, Kabwe, Kitwe, Choma, Livingstone and the capital Lusaka. At the end of each clinic, he selected three teachers per province.

The second phase will run through the first week of January and involve the 18 teachers selected during the first phase. They will participate in a five-day extensive training course in Lusaka covering coaching, the role of game officials and game operations. The 18 teachers will return to their respective provinces and share their knowledge. At the end of this phase, each province will form Coaching, Umpiring, Scoring and Game Operations Commissions.

Phase three will start with local competition on 1 February and run through to the end of March. This phase aims to qualify two teams per province for the Zambia Baseball5 National Championship. The tentative date for the National Championship is April, 2023.

The WBSC introduced Baseball5 in Zambia, a southern African nation of approximately 17 million, in February, 2019. In September, ZABSA commemorated Universities Sports Day with the nation's first Baseball5 University tournament.

In December 2020, ZABSA held their Triple Sport Launch, an introductory activity for youth participants with 116 players in Lusaka.

In April 2021 ZABSA launched a six-team urban league in Lusaka.
