Zambia to launch U-18 National Baseball5 Championship in April

The event represents the third and final stage of an important development project the WBSC launched in the country.

The Zambia Baseball Softball Association (ZABSA) announced that the inaugural U-18 Baseball5 National Championship, scheduled from 7 to 10 April, will feature 10 teams.

The National Championship is the final step of a major Baseball5 Development Project, which the WBSC started in December 2022 with educational courses in six provinces.

In January 2023, WBSC envoy coach Andrea D'Auria travelled to five provinces, reaching 154 participants. A selected number participated in a five-day advanced coaching course.

Lusaka became the first province to launch a local competition. The Southern, Eastern, Central and Copperbelt provinces will complete their local events shortly.

The local events will be instrumental in selecting the U-18 National Team participating in the Youth Baseball5 World Cup Africa Qualifier, scheduled in Ghana in May.

Before the Baseball5 National Championship, ZABSA will hold a clinic for game officials on 5 and 6 April.

"We extended the invitation to Zimbabwe," commented ZABSA secretary-general Kenny Matishi. "The whole region will benefit from this initiative."
