Los dos juegos de finales de marzo tuvieron lugar en Asia, como parte de una breve serie de la MLB serie en el Tokyo Dome de Japón. Luego, en su juego inicial de las Grandes Ligas en suelo norteamericano, Céspedes mantuvo su fuerte ritmo con un home run de gran medida (calculado en más de 460 pies) el 6 de abril en el Coliseo de Oakland. Irónicamente, el reciente gran batazo de Céspedes se produjo en el mismo estadio y en la misma fecha que lo hizo otro histórico jugador cubano de grandes ligas. Tony Oliva de Minnesota conectó el primer home run de la historia de un bateador designado en la misma arena el 6 de abril de 1973.
La marca de Céspedes en la Liga Cubana (establecida el año pasado) desapareció a principios de esta semana en La Habana, cuando el ex compañero del equipo de Granma Alfredo Despaigne elevó el estándar de 33 a 35 con más de dos semanas que quedan para jugar en la actual campaña cubana de la Serie Nacional. Mientras tanto, Céspedes ya está demostrando que es una inclinación legítima jugador de Grandes Ligas para ganar la considerable cifra de $36 millones en 4 años con el contrato firmado con el club de Oakland.
Evidentemente, es demasiado temprano para que los expatriados cubanos empiecen a apostar por Céspedes como rookie del año de la Liga Americana, una predicción que acaba de publicarse en la web oficial de los Oakland A’s, pero también es algo que ningún cubano ha logrado desde el mencionado Tony Oliva en 1964. A pesar de su poder mostrado al inicio, Céspedes bateó apenas .229 en 11 juegos y 35 turnos al bate durante la spring training. Si algo de la publicidad podría ser prematura, ya parece ser suficientemente evidente el potencial del cubano como una de las estrellas ofensivas más brillantes entre el puñado de jugadores de la Liga Cubana que han huido a las grandes ligas en la última década.
Sin embargo sólo una campaña extraordinaria de un rookie superará los números de la temporada 2009 conseguidos por su compatriota Kendry Morales con Los Angeles Angels (34 HR, 108 RBI, .306 BA). Aunque Morales se encontraba ya en su cuarta temporada en las Grandes Ligas en el momento en que disfrutó su año de despegue, tenía sólo 26 años en ese momento. Céspedes los cumplió el pasado 26 de octubre.
Como el único rookie cubano en cualquier roster de Grandes Ligas en la semana de apertura de la temporada, Yoennis Céspedes ha aumentado la lista de jugadores de origen cubano a 167 en las Grandes Ligas. El último nacido en la isla que había debutado fue el outfielder de los Texas Rangers Leonys Martín, convocado al final de la temporada el pasado otoño por los campeones de la Liga estadounidense. Martin comenzará la campaña actual con el filial de AAA de Texas en Round Rock.
Los otros nueve cubanos en los roster del primer día de competición son los siguientes: Yonder Alonso (San Diego Padres), Alexei Ramírez y Dayan Viciedo (Chicago White Sox), Kendry Morales (Los Angeles Angeles), José Contreras (Philadelphia Phillies), Yunieski Betancourt y Branyan Peña (Kansas City Royals), y Aroldis Chapman (Cincinnati Reds).
De este grupo, todos menos Alonso y Peña hicieron al menos alguna aparición en la Liga Cubana. Céspedes es ahora la 31º ex jugador de la Liga Cubana (“desertor”) en llegar a las Grandes Ligas, pero de ese número sólo un puñado han gozado de éxito en esa liga mucho más grande (Danys Báez, Orlando Hernández, Liván Hernández, Contreras, Ramírez, Morales, Betancourt, Escobar y Rolando Arrojo encabezan la lista). Céspedes ya parece una apuesta fuerte para entrar en esa comunidad.
