Olympic baseball qualifier: USA the lone undefeated team heading into final day

Group A's Dominican Republic and the United States topped Group B's Venezuela and Canada to start the Super Round in Florida. The US are now the only unbeaten squad in the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier.

USA (2-0), Dominican Republic (1-1) and Venezuela (1-1) all have their Olympic dream alive heading into the final day of competition.

Canada (0-2) has been mathematically eliminated from the Olympic qualifier.

Canada and Dominican Republic will meet at 1 p.m., followed by Venezuela and USA will 7 p.m. The last game of the tournament in Florida will determine the country that gets the fifth ticket into the six-team Tokyo Olympic baseball event, joining No. 1 Japan, No.3 Korea, No. 5 Mexico and No. 18 Israel.

The second- and third-place teams in Florida will get another shot at the WBSC Baseball Final Qualifier in Puebla, Mexico, which runs 22-26 June.

Super Round - Day 1

The Dominican Republic wasted no time getting to Venezuela's starter Jhonathan Diaz, taking advantage of a couple of defensive errors in the second inning and going deep with a couple of solo homers by Liberato and Guzman in the third frame. The Dominican lineup combined for 17 hits, including five home runs, and set the tone for an easy 14-4 win. Dominican starter Enny Romero only allowed three hits and a walk during six masterful innings of work to earn the win.

The United States defeated Canada, 10-1, after a game with a close score for two thirds and opening the score with a seven-run eighth inning. Canada managed to erase the first US lead on a solo home run by Jacob Robson off starter Homer Bailey. USA's Luke Williams put his team ahead again in the bottom of the fifth on another solo home run. Drew Parrish earned the win coming out of the bullpen.
