Hong Kong hold off Singapore’s late rally to triumph 7-6

Singapore outhit Hong Kong 5-2, but the East Asian squad still prevailed 7-6 to secure third place in the Opening Round of the II WBSC U-12 Softball World Cup.

Hong Kong’s seven runs in the second and third innings were enough to escape Singapore’s three-run surge in the fifth to win 7-6 on Friday at the II WBSC U-12 Softball World Cup in Jin-Long Stadium.

Matt Chui and Zita Tik each scored two runs, while Faye Lam, David Weiss and Colin Cheung added one run each to give Singapore the seven runs that eventually ensured their third-place spot in the Opening Round.

After a scoreless one and a half inning, Hong Kong recorded the first two runs with Chui and Tik scoring off wild pitches to lead 2-0. Singapore levelled the score at 2-2 when Joy Tan scored on a throwing error and Edwin See’s run from Shannon Ong’s RBI single.

Hong Kong replied with five runs to extend their lead to 7-2, while Singapore completed only one run in the fourth inning to trail 7-3.

Singapore had a 5-2 advantage on hits and showed a lot of fight towards the end, but the Southeast Asian squad couldn't add to their three-run spree at the top of the fifth with Caden Chan being ruled to have left early for the third out of the inning, finishing the game in Hong Kong's favour 7-6.
