04/12/2022
The final stage of the inaugural WBSC Virtual Cup was successfully held with 13 thrilling games in Strikezon in Bundang-Yatap, Seoul, Korea bringing down the curtain on a ground breaking event which featured a record breaking 8,146 entries.

On the back of Korea's Kimhwanhee winning the first-ever WBSC Virtual Cup and $10,000 in prize money on 27 November, the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) is pleased to announce the final standings for the event, which marked the international governing body's first own eSport competition and highlighted a bright future for the discipline.

The Newdin Contents’ system calculated the final standings based on the batting points of the finalists. The standings are available here. As one team withdrew, 11 teams with 22 participants competed to win the historic title. The Korean team kimhwanhee 님의 팀 defeated Bash Brothers from USA in the semifinals with a walk-off as well as Tacos al Pastor from Mexico in the final, receiving the trophy, $10,000 in prize money, a LEVERADE NFT trophy as well as high-quality helmets and bats by Gold Ball Park.

"We did our best for every single game, which led us to the great Final result. We feel great," champions Hwanhee Kim and Chungyong Kim said while also commenting on how to spend the prize money, "We split it first, and buy some baseball equipment that we need. We would like to give some to our parents and also do some travelling together."

The MVP Chungyong Kim who received a special edition baseball glove added: “We definitely enjoyed it! And I would like to participate once more.”

The WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari congratulated all the participants who were part of this historic event.

Newdin Contents CEO Jinpyo Hong commented: "We are delighted to have completed the Virtual Cup, the World Screen Baseball Tournament held in the Strikezon together with the prestigious WBSC, and we are grateful that everyone, including overseas players, completed the tournament safely and without injury."

In December 2020, the WBSC approved the inclusion of eSport with all virtual/electronic versions of baseball and softball among its official disciplines. Subsequently, early in 2021, the WBSC presented its strategic approach to eSport, which is composed of three pillars (Mobile, Pro, Virtual).
