WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Africa qualifier opens in Botswana

Botswana (host), Kenya, Lesotho and South Africa will battle for the two available spots in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage.

The WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Africa qualifier began on Tuesday with four games at the National Stadium in Gaborone, Botswana. A total of 16 games will be played in four days, as world No. 39 South Africa, No. 47 Botswana, No. 62 Lesotho and Kenya battle for the two available spots in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage.

The tournament begins with a double round robin, that will end on Thursday, followed by a page system playoffs on Friday. 

After Day 1 of competition, South Africa is the only undefeated team from two games, followed by Botswana and Kenya - who split their matches - and Lesotho who recorded two defeats.

Day 1 Results:

  • Botswana 25-0 Lesotho
  • Lesotho 0-10 Kenya
  • South Africa 9-1 Kenya
  • Botswana 3-9 South Africa

The African teams will be allocated to Group A and B of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup .

Group A will be played in Dublin, Ireland, from 11-15 July, and includes world No. 1 USA, No. 9 Australia, No. 16 Great Britain, No. 17 Ireland (host) and one team from Asia to be determined.

Valencia, Spain will host Group B from 18-22 July and will welcome world No. 5 Puerto Rico, No. 10 Netherlands, No. 11 Spain, No. 27 Cuba and one team from Asia.

With their participation in this tournament, Kenya will return to the WBSC Women’s Softball World Rankings after more than two years of absence.
