History

Softball was introduced in PNG in 1959. At that time, the game was effectively regarded as a ‘ladies’ game as baseball (with all its male aggressiveness), was popular and well established in centers like Rabaul and Lorengau. It was not until 1973 that the men folk started to play softball, first in Port Moresby then Lae, and eventually spreading to the other provinces.
To date there are over twenty (20) local, provincial and national softball associations throughout PNG consisting of well over two hundred clubs. It is estimated that there are approximately ten thousand (10, 000) softball players alone (not taking into account the bulk of followers and supporters) in the country. Softball has now become one of the most popular sports and is by far the fastest growing sport in PNG. Its uniqueness revolves around the fact that entire families can participate in the sport at the one time, either as player and/or as officials.
