History

It was in December 1980 when the very first Baseball game in Switzerland was played between the Lucerne White Sox and the Zurich Challengers. Having played a few innings, the game had to be stopped due to Snowfall. Never since a Baseball Game was scheduled in the middle of winter in our country. The Swiss Baseball and Softball Federation (SBSF) was founded on July 26th 1981 in Meggen near Lucerne by Mr.
Alfredo Sacher (President of the Baseball Club Ceresio Lugano), Mr. Werner Zingg (President of the Zurich Challengers), Mr. Karl Häfliger (President of the Lucerne Eagles) and Mr. Lothar Seinige (President of the Therwil Flyers). First President elected was Mr. Alfredo Sacher from Pura. 1983 the first official Swiss Championship with four participating Teams was played. The Zurich Challengers became the very first Swiss Champion. 1986 for the first time a Swiss National Seniors Team took part in the European Seniors Championship “B” Pool in France reaching not more than last place but also gaining valuable experiences for future International Championships In 2009 the first and up to now only baseball stadium meeting international standards was built in Zurich-Schwammendingen. The “Heerenschürli” is used for national games during the Championships as well it serves as the official training centre for all Swiss National Teams. Due to this new Baseball Stadium the Swiss Baseball and Softball Federation was given the honour to organize 2013 the CEB European Championship Qualifier Tournament in Zurich for the first time in this country. Meanwhile 21 clubs with over 50 Baseball and Softball teams and over 1000 players are playing in 5 Adult and 3 Junior Leagues throughout the country. The Swiss Baseball and Softball Federation constantly makes every effort possible to achieve further development and growth in the Baseball Sport in Switzerland.
