History

Baseball was introduced to Fiji in May 2000 through the initiative of the Baseball Confederation of Oceania (BCO), with the Fiji Islands Baseball Association which was formed one month later. The introduction of Baseball in Fiji came about due to the hosting of the 2003 South Pacific Games in Fiji. In order for Baseball to be part of the games Fiji had to field a team in Baseball.  BCO Development Officer, Ray Brown who initiated the formation of a young men’s team for the 2003 South Pacific Games is still being involved with FIBSA’s development at present.  In 2002 a Little League (Kids Baseball) was established to grow children’s interest in Baseball, after the Japanese Government provided a coach through the JICA volunteer scheme to develop the game at the primary school level. A brand new Baseball diamond was built in the Laucala Sports City for the 2003 South Pacific Games.
The availability of the facility is hoped to help raise the profile of Baseball in Fiji. In 2006 the baseball diamond was demolished by the Fiji Sports Council as it was not generating a lot of revenue for the council.  The Association’s name was changed in 2004 which is now known as the “Fiji Islands Baseball & Softball Association” (FIBSA). In 2005 Inoke Niubalavu was identified as a potential player leader that could contribute towards the development of Baseball in Fiji as he was young and a talented Baseball player. FIBSA invested in Mr. Niubalavu in 2002 & 2004 sending him to the Major League Baseball Australian Academy Program first as a player and the second opportunity as a developing coach. Since 2005 till today Mr. Niubalavu has given back to FIBSA now as the Secretary General and Development officer. He continues to break barriers using sport as tool to inspire children and youth around communities in Fiji with opportunities in representing our beloved Fiji at Baseball / Softball competition and goodwill events.
